Best Time for a Safari

Witnessing the essence of pure wildlife in natural environments, participating in wildlife conservation efforts, engaging with local communities to learn about their past and present – Tully Luxury Travel can open up the enormous world of African adventure.

The key to doing more and seeing more in Africa is to travel when the weather is fair and the wildlife sightings are plentiful.

The key to doing more and seeing more in Africa is to travel when the weather is fair and the wildlife sightings are plentiful. And for the most part, game viewing is best in dry weather, so you can navigate the roads and witness animals on the move, who are migrating to look for water. Grasslands are sparce, so you can see more. With that said, the wet season can also be a joy to travel in due to the lushness of your surroundings, despite the humidity and weather unpredictability. Being in the southern hemisphere, Africa is the reverse of North America: “summer” is November to February.

Whenever and wherever you decide, remember that last-minute planning doesn’t really work when it comes to booking, as there is bound to be something – the wildlife accessibility, the accommodation or the weather – that won’t suit you. This is where the Tully Luxury Travel Designers can step in to plan the perfect African safari at any time of the year.

Southern Africa

Eastern Africa

January - June

July - December

January - March

The earlier part of the year in Southern Africa is the green season, with a fair amount of rainfall – and with that, low pricing and smaller crowds roving the wilds. This is a very productive time in the Kalahari Desert, as many mammals begin their long migrations from Botswana to Namibia, including herds of zebra and antelope.

April - June

March and April are great shoulder-season months for South Africa and Botswana – it’s a bit rainy, but this makes for great wildlife viewing. There are lower elephant populations at this time, but they’re still around. In South Africa’s Kruger National Park and Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park – home to the renown Victoria Falls – the dry season begins, so foliage is thinner, revealing many new wonders.

July - October

The dry season in Southern Africa brings with it the most travellers and highest pricing – both very much worth withstanding. July and August are particularly in demand, as children are out of school. There are larger elephant concentrations in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in Botswana’s Chobe National Park, and the Okavango Delta teems with animals wandering in search of watering holes.

November - December

Short rains start mid-November – a second, sporadic rainy season – but the game viewing is fantastic, as the temperatures rise and the forest bursts with energy and verdancy.

January - June

July - December

January - March

In East Africa, particularly in the southern Serengeti ecosystem in northern Tanzania, many species give birth during this time – wildebeest, zebra and antelope among them. This calving season attracts many carnivorous predators, including lions and cheetahs, and clans of hyenas. Imagine how amazing it would be to see a zebra giving birth.

April - June

This part of the year in East Africa is typically a time of the long rains, and as such, many safari camps and luxury lodges along the rivers will close for the season. Camps that do remain open have great offers to extend to visitors, who come to appreciate the natural beauty of this lush, green season.

July - October

The dry season in East Africa brings the annual Great Migration of more than one-and-a-half million animals heading north from Tanzania through the Serengeti, crossing the Mara River into the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The temperatures are the best of the year, with sunny days, and crisp early mornings and evenings. This is also a great time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda – clear and sunny.

November - December

At the beginning of the summer months in East Africa, the temperatures rise and there are short rains. Waterfalls are in high-flow mode. This lush and green shoulder season can be a wonderful time to travel, with fewer crowds and vehicles, and absolutely excellent bird watching.
